The Jubilee Gala 2015

On 6th October, in the Szczecin Philharmonics, with the presence of distinguished guests, representatives of the central, regional and local governments, including the city, as well as a number of institutions, companies from the sector and representatives of the science, the Jubilee Gala was held on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Polish management of Szczecin and Świnoujście seaports. The celebration was honored by the presence of Jerzy Pietrewicz, the Deputy Minister of Economy, Dorota Pyć, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Development, Marek Tałasiewicz, the Governor, Jarosław Rzepa, the Deputy Marshal of Western Pomerania Region, and Piotr Krzystek, the Mayor of Szczecin.

During the Gala, organizers presented accomplishments of the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście. They emphasized that generations of port employees had contributed to the strong position of the ports on the maritime market. Attention was also drawn to the major influence the ports have on the economic development of Szczecin and Świnoujście, the Western Pomerania Region and the national maritime sector. Today, more than 400 maritime sector companies operate in the region providing jobs for nearly 5 thousand people.

A reference was also made to the venue of the event. Similarly to the Szczecin Philharmonics making the city and the region famous all over the world, the Szczecin and Świnoujście seaports have been doing the same for several decades.

An important part of the Gala was a trip back in time with a presentation using historical recordings made by TVP Szczecin, a regional television station. The presentation highlighted tremendous changes in the two ports during the past 65 years. The event was crowned with a music concert by the Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Szczecin and Świnoujście seaports comprise the oldest company that has been continuously operating in Western Pomerania. The Polish state administration has managed the port complex for 65 years. It all started on 1st January 1950 under the firm of the National Szczecin Seaport Authority. In December 1996, the business name was changed to the Authority of Szczecin–Świnoujście Seaport, to become later the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority.

Today, the Seaports Authority is the investment leader in the region. In 2007-2014, the Authority invested in excess of PLN650 million. The funding help modernizing road and rail infrastructure in the ports, Zbożowe and Niemieckie quays were developed close the ‘Ewa’ Silo in the Port of Szczecin, whereas in Świnoujście a new sixth ferry berthing facility was built and an LNG unloading terminal was developed in the outer port basin. Further investment of PLN1.3 million has been scheduled in the coming years.

At the moment, the dredging of 68km fairway between Szczecin and Świnoujście and the access channel in Świnoujście, respectively to 12.5m and 14.5m, are crucial for further development of the port. Other important investment projects includes rebuilding of rail infrastructure (E-59 and CE-59) and roads leading to the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście (S3), as well as modernizing the Oder Waterway. Measures in those areas are necessary for the ports to maintain their strong position on the highly competitive maritime market.
