Container terminal in Świnoujście. Sustainable development of the Port and City!

The concept of an external port complex consisting of deep-water container terminal, general purpose terminal and an existing gas port is a new vision of the sustainable development of Świnoujście, both in the economic, tourist and spa areas. Basing on this project, Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority aims at developing the area of socially responsible business.

The Szczecin-Świnoujście Port complex reports on cargo handling in 2020

In 2020, at the quays under the administration of the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority, cargo handling by the port-based companies has reached levels close to those of 2019. The volume handled by the two ports at the end of the year was 31,177.5 thou. tons, which is only 3.1% less than in 2019 (32,174.8 thou. tons).

Świnoujście. The terminal will handle up to 2 million containers per year!

The deep-water container terminal in Świnoujście will not only be able to accommodate the largest ocean container ships. The proposed  external port will be able to handle up to 2 mln  TEU per year.

Without the synergies provided by the combination of rail, road and inland waterway transport, it is scarcely possible to meet competition and customer expectations in contemporary market conditions while maintaining high environmental standards. Therefore, in the case of container terminal in Świnoujście, intermodal will be the mode of transport that shall mainly connect the terminal with its hinterland.

The deep-water container terminal will become part of the terminal complex, which will take over the functions of the current internal port in Świnoujście, together with the LNG terminal and universal terminal. The external port complex, located in the proximity of Danish Straits and on the Baltic-Adriatic-Mediterranean transport corridors axis, connecting Central and Eastern Europe with Scandinavia, will become a nodal port, a transit gateway for entire hinterland along these transport routes.

The deep-water container terminal project in Świnoujście fits into the EU plan to create a single European transport area, aiming at increase of competitiveness,  supporting green transport and intermodality. It also fulfils the objectives of the White Paper, which sets the directions of development of the European Community's multimodal transport corridors. The terminal in Świnoujście naturally fits into these assumptions, because it will be very well connected with the hinterland (railway, road systems, barges) as well as from the Baltic Sea side.

Environmental protection is included in the mission of construction of a deep-water container terminal in Świnoujście. The terminal will be developed according to green terminal concept. The Management Board of Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority ensures that the project will be ecological at every stage: from it’s design, through the stage of implementation of the investment, to the operation of the terminal.
